Plaque refers to the bacteria that gather around your teeth as they eat stuck food particles that collect in your mouth. Plaque is unavoidable, as there will always be bacteria in your mouth, but regular oral hygiene can easily remove it.
Tartar, however, is a different story. Tartar is a hard substance that forms on your teeth when plaque is left to accumulate. Tartar causes cavities and gum disease over time. Brushing alone cannot reliably remove tartar, so it’s important for you to visit us for your dental exam in Kennebunk. We will remove any built-up tartar.
